REASERACH INTO RAP/HIP-HOP MAGAZINE FRONT COVERS

REASERACH INTO RAP/HIP-HOP MAGAZINE FRONT COVERS

When initially looking at front covers that are also in my chosen genre there are themes that run throughout most of the magazines, i can see that the color red is apparent in the majority of the magazine front cover I can see, this is either in the masthead or in the background of the image. The color red could represent danger and the rap/hip-hop community is usually labeled with the stereotype that it is has allot of crime and profanities drawn towards it, I must implement this in my work as it a clear code and convention of rap/hip-hop magazines. I can also see that the colors white and black are also used allot, this is a good combination as it draws contrast and allows the reader to see the text more clearly from a further distance, I can see that i will need to implement all three of these colors as it most represents a existing music magazine due to meeting criteria for codes and conventions. I can also see that some of the music magazines have a variety of color , however some have a black and white theme with the main image being in black and white. This makes the image look more striking and makes it more intimidating which this genre is usually associated with. The background colour is darker when this effect is used and therefore it makes the actor look more fairer skinned. The camera shot that is used in the majority of these magazine covers are, close up camera shot, medium shot or a medium long shot. All of these camera angles give the reader a chance to see the full face of the artist and allow them to see effects that may have been added onto them, for instance i have chosen to look closer at this specific magazine with Chance the rapper on the cover of the magazine. It does not have allot of subheadings which make the page look quite empty however the image is striking and effective, i am hoping to get an image just as striking as this as it will make my magazine cover look much more interesting and also professional. When looking at the placement of the subheadings I can see that XXL magazine have used smaller subheadings in the corners of their magazine cover to allow the image to be more dominant. this makes the image even more striking as not allot of text is over the image which is typically a convention of a music magazine.

I can see that the majority of poses the actors are making are not playful and are quite intimidating, I can implement this in my front cover as it will not be hard to achieve, also the use of props i can see that hats are used frequently and also i can see the use of a phallic symbol with a gun, this could suggest that rap/hip-hop magazines are very masculine, phallic symbols combined with the fact that i cannot see any women that are on the front cover of any of these magazines. However when a women is on the front cover such as Nicki Minaj, she is objectified and presented as an item, this supports Laura Mulveys male gaze theory.

I believe that my magazine will be successful if i use the codes and conventions i see from looking at these magazines. I am going to use the colors i saw the most of which are red, black and white. these colors make it easy for the consumers to read and also will make my magazine similar to the existing music magazine that are in my genre.
